Casting Kids

On May 5th 2008, the Ottawa Valley South Bassmasters held a Casting Kids event for the 72nd St Mark's Cub Pack. At the same time, the kids earned their fishing badges by learning how to cast at targets, tie knots and identify species of fish. The kids were also treated to lure prize packs from one of our sponsored anglers. As you can see from the pictures below, everybody had a good time and the kids learned lots of things.

Annual Kids Fishing Day at Dow's Lake

On Sunday, July 11th 2010, during the National Fishing Week, the East Ottawa Optimist Club and Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Ottawa held the Annual Kids Fishing Day at Dow's Lake. As in the past, members of the Ottawa Valley South Bassmasters once again had the honour to be involved and were more than willing to contribute to this great event! Along with a team of volunteers from other fishing groups and organizations, we helped the kids tie hooks to their line, taught kids how to cast their rods, baited hooks with worms, identify fish caught and showed the kids how to handle and release the fish. A free hot dog lunch was provided and the kids got to keep the rod and reel along with a small tackle box and gift at the end of the day. Representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources were present as well helping with the kids and displaying a booth on conservation and poaching. And last but not least, Big Jim was going around giving out freebies to all the kids and some of the big kids.

Conservation

On Saturday, September 3rd 2011, members of the Ottawa Valley South Bassmasters held its second Tree Drop Event on Mississippi Lake as part of the chapters commitment to conservation. The first Tree Drop Event was held the previous year on the same body of water with great success. The purpose of the "tree drop" is to create fish cover and habitat for all species of fish, not just bass, using bundles of old cedar/pine trees anchored in place with concrete blocks or bricks. With approval and funding from the MNR Program, Community Fisheries and Wildlife Involvement Program (CFWIP), it was another successful tree drop. Also a big thank you to the cottage owner on the lake that donated the trees from his property.
